Stellenbosch University (StU) is a preeminent and research-oriented public higher education institution in South Africa, and has consistently distinguished itself as one of the top universities on the African continent. StU hosts 41 Research Chairs and seven national Centres of Excellence supported by the South African Department of Science and Technology, and the University manages more than 2500 active research contracts. StU has strong research and development infrastructure and places a high priority on performing industrially relevant research that leads to measurable impact.

 

The University has strong Faculties of Science, AgriScience and Engineering, and a well-developed culture of collaboration between these Faculties. StU is further involved in a number of H2020 projects, with strong international collaboration networks within the EU. The University is therefore well-placed to participate in large research consortia, and experienced in administration of international research funds.

Neill Goosen

Senior Lecturer and researcher at the Department of Process Engineering, Stellenbosch University since 2013, with a PhD in Chemical Engineering. Dr. Goosen’s main research is centred around valorisation of seafood processing and other agricultural by-products through development and optimisation of environmentally friendly processing methods; relevant products are evaluated in model aquaculture species. His research is tailored towards needs of South African industry, and thus far his research has resulted in the commercialisation of 2 production processes based on marine products and by-products. Part of the Bioresource Engineering group, he has successfully completed a number of research projects, and consistently secures funding from local industry and public funding bodies. He has authored or co-authored 12 peer reviewed scientific papers and 21 conference papers.

Khalid Salie

Senior Lecturer at the Department of Animal Science and co-ordinator of the academic programme for Aquaculture. His research areas include water ecology, aquaponics and sustainable aquaculture development. He has been affiliated to Stellenbosch University in various capacities since 1998 and has established collaborative networks among private, public and community fraternities. He has served on the Executive Committee of the Aquaculture Association of Southern Africa and is involved in the establishment of the African Chapter of the World Aquaculture Association.
