The Scottish Association for Marine Science LBG (United Kingdom)

SAMS is Europe’s oldest independent marine science organisation, dedicated to delivering marine science for a healthy and sustainable marine environment through research, education and engagement with society. SAMS has expertise in marine and coastal ecosystem ecology, ecosystem functioning, biodiversity and conservation. This is coupled with an ongoing research base in marine industries and the blue economy. This includes experience in the development of sustainable aquaculture, marine biotechnology, marine renewables, environmental ‘omics , the use of remote sensing including new platforms such as remotely piloted Aircraft and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles.

This marine science is increasingly being directed towards economic development and policy and regulatory support, both nationally and internationally.

SAMS has extensive experience of participating in and leading European projects dating back to FP4. Recently of note and relevance to this application SAMS has coordinated the FP7 project IDREEM which helped the development of IMTA (Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture) across Europe and AquaSpace which was a H2020 project aiming to understand spatial and socio-economic constraints on the expansion of aquaculture, and to test tools to help overcome these constraint.

Partners / Researchers

Paul Tett

Professor Paul Tett has expertise in working with social-ecological marine systems, understand the dependencies between social and economic growth and ecosystem function, services and provision. He is a biological oceanographer studying and numerically modelling phytoplankton in relation to marine physical processes, with applications to eutrophication and the health of marine ecosystems, this has led more recently to work on pelagic ecosystem health that has influenced Defra’s approach to monitoring UK waters for the MSFD. He is now the Research Area leader of the Laurence Mee Centre for Society and the Sea and is the coordinator of the H2020 project AquaSpace.

Adam Hughes

Dr Adam Hughes is senior lecturer in sustainable aquaculture at SAMS. He has extensive experience in low trophic and integrated aquaculture systems and co-ordinated the FP7 project IDREEM. He chairs the University of Highlands and Islands Knowledge Exchange group for aquaculture, he is the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology Scotland convenor for the sustainable aquaculture forum and has sat on ministerial working groups for aquaculture. He is also an editor of the journal Aquaculture Environment Interactions.
