This report was developed as a learning material for use in the AquaVitae MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) developed by the project during 2021-2022. The report presents the concept of low trophic species, discusses some of the most commonly used classification systems for culture systems (open/closed systems and intensive/extensive systems), and present a categorisation and description of production systems used in low trophic species aquaculture. The categorisation presented is based on location, i.e., land-based or sea-based systems, and sea based systems are subdivided into on-bottom and off-bottom systems. The use of different systems for co-culture application and recent developments of offshore/exposed areas are exemplified. Where possible, the different systems are illustrated using examples from the AquaVitae project.
